The Whore

The Whore-CelebrateLife

Sunita picked red top and black jeans for the night. She was already late. Rahul is coming to pick her up. He is already on the way. After taking bath, she looked at herself in the mirror. Red deep neck top, black jeans and dark red lipstick were complementing her glowing white skin. Rahul has reached and was waiting below her building. Tonight, she is going to get good compliments!

She looked at her watch. It’s already 9 pm.

Rahul: Hey gorgeous! Looking lovely, ready for metro’s night life?

Sunita: (blushes) Thanks! Yes, I am.

Rahul was on the driving seat. Today he has promised to show her the red-light area of the city. She is curious. She has never been to such a place.

Rahul: Miss, why do you want to see this particular area of the city?

Sunita: Just like that…

Rahul: Just like what?

Sunita: I want to see how they look, their dress and their body language. I have never seen one.

Rahul: Oh! Something like we go to zoo to see lion. You want to see mother/sister/wife etc in prostitution?

Sunita: What is this nonsense?

Rahul: Nothing.

Geeta wore saree tonight. Indian men still want to see their woman in Indian dress. But wives have become modern now-a-days. They are busy in kitty parties. They prefer mini/jeans dress etc. over saree. Saree is reserved for festivals. White or black colour dress is marked for mourning, so suhagans simply avoided all these colors. But that is past now. She prefers saree over western cloths. It attracts more customers, especially foreigner and youngsters. Shorter dresses attract older customers. Geeta laughed at her own joke.

Rahul: How is your husband?

Sunita: Achhen hai!

Rahul: When will he return?

Sunita: Monday.

Rahul: Nice. That means we can have some private time on Sunday.

Sunita blushed and gave a peck on his cheek.

Rahul: Miss. Behaves yourself. Else I will take you to my flat and not show you the zoo.

Sunita: (Showing anger) Bad manners. we are not going to the zoo.

Rahul: Hmm … Ok.

Rahul went back in memory lane, when Sunita has joined office. She was a receptionist. No degrees added since then, but now she is in management now. By the degree of being a woman. She has pleased all her bosses. Rahul is also a friend. Every now and then she would remind him that he is cute. She misses him. He is seven years younger to her. She tries to spend most of her time with him. She keeps checking on him. So, whenever she feels like he is talking more to other girls in the office, he compensates by spending extra time with her during weekends. That is how this weekend meet got organized. Otherwise Mr. Sood was eager to spend this weekend with her.

Rahul turned the car into the lane leading to ‘that’ area of the city.

The Whore-CelebrateLife

Geeta was standing on the street, waiting for customers. She has been working there since she was 14. She is getting old. Soon she will be thrown on the streets to beg. After years of this, all she has managed is a room of her own. She doesn’t want to become a beggar. Now a day’s, whatever she saves goes to the bank account which she could open with help of one of the social workers.

Social worker has told her that they rehabilitate prostitutes. She would be trained in Grih-udyog… making paper, sewing, thread work etc. People say these NGOs are not as nice as they sound. They sell ladies to countries like Kuwait/Dubai etc. She is planning to relocate to some other small city. She will also sell her room and start a new life with her savings.

Sunita: See their makeup, dark and glossy. How cheap they look na?

Rahul: Cheap? Why so?

Sunita: Oh sorry-sorry, seems you like them.

Rahul: Yes I love them!

Sunita: Ha ha ha… Nice joke. Look at that one, in saree.

Rahul: (Looked at the woman Sunita was pointing at. The lady had put dark makeup on her face but she looked lost somewhere, may be absorbed in problems of her life) What in her?

Sunita: Arey, She should know men doesn’t like girls in traditional Indian dress anymore. She should know how to market herself. Poor she. May be that is why she looks sad … must be facing difficulty in getting customers.

Rahul stopped the car and asked the lady in saree to come.

Geeta: Sahib, Rs. 500 lagega.

(When she saw Sunita) Nahi sahib main aurton ke saath nahi jaungi.

Sunita started laughing.

Rahul: Come in. We will take you to treat tonight. Won’t do anything with you. At returning we will pay you Rs. 1000.

Geeta smiled. She opened the door of the car and took the back seat.

Sunita turned to Geeta

Sunita: Kya naam hai?

Geeta: Geeta

Rahul: Geeta, meet her. She is Sunita.

Geeta: Hello Madam

Sunita: Hi! Do you speak English?

Geeta: Yes madam.

Rahul: Geeta, Sunita Madam will tell you tonight how you should dress and what you shall do to get more customers. She feels you don’t know your business. As far as I have seen in previous years, she knows these secrets very well. She is also in the same business.

Sunita: How dare you talk like this? (Sunita became red in fury)

Rahul: What? What have I said wrong? You are married and have slept with five different men to get promotions. I sincerely feel you will be a good teacher to Geeta.

Sunita: (Even louder) I slept with them? I did so because they were dying to sleep with me. I have not taken any privilege. I got promotions because I deserve it. What are you? Jealous? This is what you think of me?

Rahul: laughed

Geeta: Sahib aise kyun bolte ho? Kaun si aurat apni marzi se ye sab karti hai? Madam ki koi majburi rahi hogi. Admi sab to hote hi hai aise. Aurat se chahiye hi kya unhe!

Rahul: Geeta, madam aur tum me fark hai. Tumhe jine ke liye paise chahiye. Bhookh bardast nahi kar saki hogi. Sadak pe kaise rahogi, to aayi hogi yahan. Madam, ke paas ghar hai, pati hai, pita hai. Abb tak bachhe nahi hai, fir bhi inhe behtar zindagi ke liye ye sab karna padta hai. Inhe to traits bhi pata hai. Tumse samjhdar hai ye.

Sunita: Stop the car. Don’t you ever dare to talk to me or meet me! You b*****. You enjoyed all those times with me and now you are calling me a whore?

Rahul: Sunita, chill. I am not saying you are wrong. I just don’t find it ethical to use the word “whore” for anyone. As much as I respect you, I respect Geeta too. If being a woman, you feel this way for her, it’s a shame for our society.

Sunita: I don’t want any lectures from you. How dare you do all these? How dare you talk to me like this. Stop the car. Stop it right now. I don’t want to see your face again.

Rahul stopped the car. Sunita got down. Rahul took Geeta for dinner and dropped her back to the place where he has picked her. He paid her double, as promised. He also gave her his number, just in case she needs it in future.

Geeta felt it was one of the good nights of her life. She felt Rahul was god sent. First time in her life, she met a person who respected her and not used her. He was not ashamed to take her to a public place or introduce her to his friends. With renewed faith in humanity, she vowed to start a small business in a new city soon.
